The downdraft gasifier has double stages for air supply, with biomass moving through gasification reaction zones (storage, drying, pyrolysis, combustion and reduction, respectively; Fig. 2). In a downdraft gasifier, we are trying to burn the tar gashaiqi from pyrolysis to generate heat to run reduction, as well as the CO 2 and H 2 O to reduce in reduction. The goal in combustion in a downdraft is to get good mixing and high temps so that all the tars are either burned or cracked, and thus will not be present in the outgoing gas.
Downdraft gasifiers produce an order of magnitude less tar [haiqi, et al., 1987]. The - design shown in Fig. 3b was the dominant design used during World War II. In this design, the r combustion zone is fixed at the point of air injection, and product gas is drawn out from below. Pyrolysis occurs above and continues within the combustion zone.

A patented design of 60-kW downdraft gasifier and an internal combustion engine with 10 kW generator were used to generate electricity from co-gasification of various ratios of MSW and biomass. The maximum heating values (LHV) of syngas obtained at MSW ratio of 0, 20, and 40 wt.% were 6.91, 7.74, and 6.78 MJ/Nm3, respectively.
