The purpose of this handbook is to support a growing number of small communities across British Columbia and Alberta interested in making a business case for biomass district heating (DH). Small-scale biomass DH systems can be a centerpiece of an integrated strategy on clean energy, energy independence and a transition to a green economy.
Biogas is upgraded producer gas – the gas formed in the gasifier – used in combustion engines for small-scale heat and power generation. Even gas produced by fermentation can be used for this purpose. Table 2.5 Potential for biogas production in Sweden [4].
IEA Bioenergy Task 33 Workshop: Thermal biomass gasification in small scale Page4 Introduction Combined heat and power generation (CHP) or cogeneration has been considered worldwide as the major alternative to traditional systems in terms of significant energy saving and environmental conservation.
Small Scale Gasifier CHP •Origins: Engines in WWII •Adapted to Stationary Power in 1970-95 •Publically funded demonstration projects- many attempts, few succeshaiqi •US RD&D Programs stimulated new interest 2003- 2007 •North American rediscovery 2007-2010 •Europe continued R&D. Limited commercial application in CHP, expand scale.

May 15, 2021 · This allowed collecting an extended set of data and drawing up a unique overview of the reference values for the ranges of operation of small-scale biomass gasification systems currently available in the European market, in terms of equivalence ratio, dry gas composition and heating value, specific electricity production, and conversion
inventory of the techniques and systems for small scale gasifier-gas engine combined heat and power (CHP) production and to evaluate the technology. Small scale is defined here as plants up to 10 MW th, and the fuel used in the gasifier is some kind of biofuel, usually woody biofuel in the form of chips, pellets, or sawdust.
See the link below for pictures of a small scale home made gasification system setup. The gasifier is equipped with effective means for heating the primary air and the fuel and is to be equipped with an automatic fuel feeding system. The gas cleaning system operates in dry state and the condensate from the cooling system is clear.

Choy et al. (2004) studied the impact of process design on the feasibility of small scale MSW gasification for a university campus heat and electricity generation. The study investigated the
Gasification is a technology that generates combustible gahaiqi such as hydrogen, methane , and carbon monoxide from hydrocarbons, in a reduced environment. oxygen The gahaiqi produced can be used directly for cooking or can be used in a gas engine to generate electricity. In order to increase efficiency by reducing heat loss from the gasifier, the gasifier (102) is concentrically-disposed within the endothermic reaction zone of the combustor (118). A process and method is provided for operating a small-scale high-throughput gasifier.

There are many different gasification methods in use or in development, but the small-scale power gasifiers use almost exclusively the downdraft fixed-bed technology. The air/gas stream moves downwards through a fixed (not fluidized) bed of woodchips. This is the only economic option on a small-scale that also produces a fairly clean gas.
